If you are in Australia, you can apply for an extension of tourist visa subclass 600 unless there is an 8503 condition imposed on. In addition to that, you must also possess a valid passport from the list of countries that have been approved by the Australian government, with at least six months validity beyond your actual travel date. 

Condition 8503 is a heinous condition that doesn’t allow people to get their visa extended while you’re in Australia. To put this condition might be on the discretion of the officer who is individually handling your case. 

Processing the New Visa

If you’re planning to extend your tourist visa subclass 600, then it is advisable to do this 3 months prior to your visa expiration date. Processing the new visa might take 10-30 days. In case, if you are not given a visa extension then you must leave the country within the amount of time as stated in the final decision notice issued by the Department of Immigration. 

If you start a new visitor application while you’re in Australia, and you make up your mind to not take it further, then you must inform this to the Department of Immigration before your original tourist visa expires.
