Pathway to PR after Studying the Diploma of Nursing

Pathway to PR

This article explores the comprehensive journey of pursuing a Diploma of Nursing in Australia and the potential pathway it offers for Enrolled Nurses to attain Permanent Residency (PR). Nursing is a highly sought-after profession in the country.

How does Enrolled Nursing contribute to obtaining PR?

In Australia, aspiring enrolled nurses must complete a 1.5-year Diploma in Nursing. However, it's important to note that this diploma doesn't make you eligible for a Graduate Work Visa upon completion.

To elevate your status to a Registered Nurse, a further step involves pursuing a 3-year Bachelor of Nursing. If you come from a non-English-speaking background, achieving an IELTS score of 7 in each band is mandatory.

Upon finishing the course, a crucial step is to successfully pass a Skill Assessment. Undertaking your course placement in Australia generally aligns with the requirements for the Skill Assessment. The key criteria for passing the assessment include becoming registered with AHPRA, clearing a skill assessment with ANMAC, and achieving an IELTS score of 7 in each band. Remarkably, no additional work experience is necessary, as practicals are typically integrated into the course. The skill assessment process typically takes 3-5 months post-graduation.

Once the skill assessment is successfully completed, you become eligible to apply for relevant visas.

Notably, pursuing a Diploma in Nursing doesn't make you eligible for the graduate visa. Therefore, you'll need to explore alternative visa options to stay in Australia after completing the course, unless you opt to go offshore and wait.

Potential alternative visas include:

  1. Student Visa – Gain credit for the Diploma and consider pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing to become a registered nurse. Another option is to study a complementary course like a Diploma in Mental Health or Community Services.

  2. Training Visa – Subclass 407 – Requires an employer to hire and nominate you, allowing you to remain in Australia during the skill assessment processing.

  3. Working holiday visa

  4. Partner Visa

The subsequent steps involve completing the skill assessment, working in the industry, submitting an Expression of Interest, and requesting an invitation for State Nominated (Subclass 190) or Skilled Regional (Subclass 491) visas. It's crucial to acknowledge that each state has distinct requirements, so referring to the specific state's requirements is imperative.

Additionally, Employer-sponsored or Training Visas present viable alternatives.

It's essential to note that the information provided is general in nature, and individuals are encouraged to consult with specialist migration agents to gain insights into their specific situations.
